The NFL’s Mitchell Report

Posted by Mike on September 22, 2008

The San Diego Union-Tribune has compiled a list and put together a version of the NFL’s Mitchell Report. The list has a total of 185 names dating all the way back to 1962, as compared to the Major League Baseball’s Mitchell Report which had a total of 89 names. The list comes from “hundreds of media reports, archives, plus public records and interviews with players and league personnel. It is not considered comprehensive or proportional, just the best snapshot that could be provided through those sources”. The NFL has always been at the forefront of sports in trying to eliminate any type of drug/steroid use in the sport. However in such a physical sport there will always be the element of steroids involved. Some interesting names from the list:

CB Deion Sanders (2005) tested positive for steroid-related substance before rejoining the league. He said it was in medication he was taking to treat an injured ankle.

OL Bill Fralic (early 1980s) said he used steroids in college at Pitt. He later told U.S. Senate committee that as much as 75 percent of NFL linebackers, linemen and tight ends have used steroids.

OL Bill Curry (1965) used Diabol to increase to 240 pounds from 220, according to New York Times.

DL Joe Klecko (1979-81) said he took steroids in offseason for strong-man contests, according to book by Charles Yesalis.

LB Bill Romanowski (2003) tested positive for the designer steroid THG. He later told “60 Minutes” he used steroids and HGH.

DL Mike Golic (1987) said in 2007 that he used steroids to come back from shoulder injury.

Coach George Allen (1974). Former player Walt Sweeney testified in suit that Allen told players, “If it takes amphetamines to win, I will bring it in by the truckload.”

JD Drew Out For Season ?

Posted by Mike on September 22, 2008

Anyone surprised ? According to the Hartford Courant, JD Drew admitted that his back problem might end his season. The Red Sox $14 Million dollar man has never been one to play through pain. So far through his 11-year career, Drew has only played over 140 games three times. Compare that with Manny Ramirez in his 16-year career, he has played over 140 games nine times. This season was thought to be Drew’s breakout season with the Red Sox, he did carry the team for a period of time while David Ortiz was hurt, but then Drew returned to his old-self and complained about pain and injury and sent out a bunch of games and eventually went on the D.L. Red Sox GM Theo Epstein took criticism for signing JD D.L. Drew but the critics seemed to be changing their thoughts on Drew until he got hurt once again. More from the Hartford Courant:

J.D. Drew acknowledged that his lingering back problem could end his season. He hasn’t played since mid-August and pain and stiffness remain because of a herniated disk.

“It’s frustrating,” Drew said. “It’s getting close to the end. I know the training staff is scratching their heads. Maybe another epidural. One day it’s going to get better. I don’t know what day it’s going to be.”

Ed Hochuli Has A Website

Posted by Mike on September 22, 2008

NFL referee Ed Hochuli made big news last week when he blew his whistle early ( I have been known to do that as well) that would have resulted in a Denver Broncos fumble and would have cemented the San Diego Chargers victory. Instead the Broncos won and Hochuli’s blunder has been all over the news and its been said to be really weighing on Hochuli. So what better way to stay out of the limelight then answer every single e-mail that was sent to you. The NFL has since told Hochuli to keep quiet about the matter, but he continues to answer e-mails at his website: http://www.nfl85.com/. That’s right, an NFL referee has a website that includes:

  • include updates of Ed’s weekly schedule
  • include photos
  • outline the “Herculean” workout regimen
  • take a video tour with Ed of his “crib”
  • I for one am now a member of the Ed Hochuli messageboard where I can chat with Ed and ask him questions about the past weeks game. The NFL must love this! In the ever secretive NFL where they love to keep things quiet this referee will not let his blunder die. The NFL is now going to be tighter on Hoculi then his shirt is on him.

Al Davis Finally Gets His Wish

Posted by Mike on September 22, 2008

Fox Sports Jay Glazer is reporting that on Monday the Oakland Raiders will finally fire head coach Lane Kiffin. The Raiderson Sunday lost a heart-breaker to the Buffalo Bills 24-23 on a last second field goal by Bills kicker Rian Lindell. The Raiders dictator Al Davis was just waiting for the next possible loss by the Raiders so he could fire Kiffin, someone he just didn’t get along with. There was talk in the off-season that Davis wanted to fire Kiffin, but Davis didn’t want to eat the money he owed Kiffin. It was an inevitable ending for Kiffin and for anyone else who coaches the Raiders it truly is an impossible task. More from Jay Glazer:

Kiffin has been informed by Raiders officials that Al Davis intends to remove him as the team’s head coach as early as Monday, FOXSports.com has learned.

Davis blamed Kiffin for the Raiders’ 24-23 loss on Sunday to the Bills, and told his underlings that he will make the move on Monday. However, word was leaked out last week in a similar fashion and Kiffin survived. Players reached out to FOXSports.com to express hope that the move would not be made, and with Davis you can never be certain.

Kiffin reportedly has been on bad terms with Davis since shortly after last season. Sources said that when Kiffin informed Davis of coaching changes he wanted to make, the owner actually sent word to those coaches that the head coach was looking to make a move, but that Davis would protect them.

Mike Golic Jr Doesn’t Make Daddy Proud

Posted by Mike on September 22, 2008

The son of ESPN’s Mike Golic, Mike Golic Jr a center on the Notre Dame Football Team was arrested yesterday, along with 41 others for misdemeanor alcohol charges. Some how I doubt this will be discussed on Golic’s morning show Mike and Mike (Update:Golic did talk about his son’s arrest this morning). It’s nothing of a shocker for a college student to get in trouble for drinking in College, it comes with the territory, but when you have a father who is mildly famous and go to a prestigious school like Notre Dame it makes it a news story. This isn’t the first time a Golichas been involved in a news story this year, early Mike Golic admitted on ESPN Radio that he took steroids.

    NFL Picks

Posted by Mike on September 21, 2008

    Arizona at Washington (-3)

I like the Skins here, there offense showed some life against a terrible defense and Arizona’s defense is not much better.  I also like the Redskins running game to go with an efficient passing game against an average defense.  The Cardinals have a good offense but they can not run the ball they are 1 dimensional and the Redskins defense should be able to hold off the passing game, because the Edge won’t get anything going against that front 7.

    Take the Redskins (-3)

    Steelers at Eagles (-3)

I like the Eagles today there offense is explosive and McNabb is healthy.  Reggie Brown is back today to go along with the rookie Desean Jackson who all he does is make big plays. Also Westbrook is an absolute stud there is no one on the Steelers defense that can match up with him out of the backfield.  Look what the Eagles did against the Cowboys, they lit them up I see the Eagles putting up some points again in this one.  Ben Roethlisberger has a bum shoulder and a shaky offensiveline.  They also have not played against a good defense like the Eagles either.   I see Big Ben throwing a couple of picks against the secondary.

    Take the Eagles (-3)

    College Picks

Posted by Mike on September 20, 2008

    Georgia (-7) at Arizona St.

I like Georgia today… They will get there offense back on track against a marginal team.  ASU lost last week to UNLV, and only scored 20 points against there defense.  The Bulldog defense is one of the best in the nation and it will stifle the ASU offense.  Mathew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno will get back on track this week with AJ Green emerging as one of the best wideouts in the SEC.  I like Georgia big in this one.

    Take Georgia (-7)

    LSU at Auburn (under 37)

Take the under guys this is gonna be a defensive battle, this is gonna be the a low scoring affair.  Both teams have great defenses and not good offenses.  Auburn and LSU have QBs to manage the game and not make any mistakes and let the defense win it for them.

    Take the Under 37
