Al Jefferson Doesn’t Like To Pay His Bets

Posted by Mike on December 5, 2008

dCeltics Timberwolves Basketball

No, Al Jefferson is not evolving into the Pete Rose of the NBA, nor does he has Tim Donaghy’s number on speed dial. We think. But, Jefferson had a bet with his current Minneosta Timberwolves teammate, Sebastian Telfair, if Telfair could dunk a basketball, reports Hoops World. What did the pride of Coney Island do ? Well, Telfair threw the ball off the backboard and dunked it, a la Kenny Smith in the 1992 dunk contest. Well, much like the “ladies” who I have come to my house, Telfair is still waiting for his money. Apparently, Jefferson doesn’t pay people who he can beat up. More from Hoops World:

Amusing Note: Apparently Al Jefferson and Sebastian Telfair had a friendly wager; Al challenged Bassy’s ability to dunk the ball, putting $500 on it. Bassy apparently tossed the ball off the backboard and jammed it home. Bassy openly questioned Al about where his money was; Al responded jokingly “I don’t pay people I can beat up…” Guess Al forgets Sebastian is from Conley Island – they don’t play in Coney Island.

Ray Allen Helps Keep Friend Safe In India

Posted by Mike on December 4, 2008

Boston Celtics shooting guard, Ray Allen, has always been referred to as a consummate professional. But what Allen did on Wednesday, November 26th, was help keep long-time friend Daryl Jones safe while Jones was staying in the Oberoi Trident Hotel when it was attacked last week, reports When Allen first heard of the attacks from his wife, he called Jones and told him exactly what was going on, and do not, under any circumstances even if Amrita Arora is knocking on the door, don’t open it up!  With the help of Allen, Jones was able to safely come back across the pond. More from

Allen’s longtime friend Daryl Jones was in the Oberoi Trident Hotel when it was attacked with grenades and assault rifles in a rampage beginning Nov. 26. The Northwest Airlines flight attendant had gone to the front desk to get a new room key when he heard shooting in the lobby. Allen said Jones immediately headed to the 21st floor, where another hotel guest allowed him to hide in his room for two days.

Allen learned of the attack during a phone call from his wife, Shannon, after a win over Golden State that night. Upon arriving home, Allen gave a whispering Jones an updated television news report for about 20 minutes. Worried that Jones could be targeted because he was an American, Allen also told his friend that if a terrorist asked for his passport to say he didn’t have it and that he was Jamaican.

“When I called him, I was telling him everything I heard on TV,” Allen said yesterday. “[Jones learned] about the hotel being on fire and I told him that there was police outside. I told him, ‘This is what is happening. From what they are saying, there are still terrorists running around shooting people and throwing grenades. You need to hide and don’t open the door if someone knocks on it.’

“We talked for about 20 minutes and I told him, ‘We’ll be [by the phone] if you need to call back. If you call back, we’ll be up waiting, and if you [don’t call], just leave us a message letting us know you’re all right.’ “

Former Boston Celtic Rodney Rogers Paralyzed

Posted by Mike on December 4, 2008

From ESPN:

Former NBA and college basketball star Rodney Rogers is paralyzed as the result of an all-terrain vehicle accident, his college coach told the News & Observer of Raleigh-Durham, N.C.

Rogers, 37, who had a 12-year NBA career and won the league’s Sixth Man Award in 1999-2000, was riding in the woods in rural Vance County, N.C., last week when he fell off the vehicle, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, the newspaper reported. He was recently transferred from Duke Hospital to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, which specializes in rehabilitation for people with catastrophic injuries.

A Durham native who starred in high school football and basketball, Rogers had returned to his hometown and was working for the city public works department as a heavy machinery operator. He was promoted to a supervisory position six months ago, according to the report.

He was also volunteering as a girls’ basketball coach at a Durham middle school and had set up a computer lab at a city public housing complex, according to the report.

Countdown To When Stephon Marbury Goes Broke: 1,029 Days

Posted by Mike on December 4, 2008

Stephon Marbury maybe a very wealthy man, who has made over $130 Million dollars in his NBA career, but with the way that he is spending, he won’t be wealthy for too much longer. According to Page Six, Marbury is going to go ahead and purchase the $40 Million dollar private jet that he was considering in August. Which probably isn’t one of the best investments for someone, who isn’t worth at least $300 Million dollars, and probably doesn’t have too much to do. I mean, that Starbury line has really taken off. With his NBA career coming to an end, and costs for maintaining private jets not cheap, it’s inevitable that we will someday read a story about how Stephon Marbury has declared for bankruptcy, or has found a new love; tattoo removal. More from Page Six:

STEPHON Marbury, the unwanted Knicks guard, is going ahead with buying a $40 million private jet, as Page Six first reported back in August. Although Marbury has yet to play this season, and the Knicks brass can’t find any other team willing to take on his $21 million salary, the untradeable Coney Island native is awaiting delivery of the aircraft, according to the buzz at SoHo’s Salt restaurant. “He already paid a large deposit in the multimillions and has no plans to try to cancel the order,” said one source. Since the top NBA teams have their own jets, and the less-flush teams travel by charter, it’s a mystery why Marbury would buy his own plane – unless he expects his future teammates to dislike him as much as the Knick players do and he feels the need to travel solo.

Whatta Night For Rondo!

Posted by Mike on December 4, 2008

His name might not yet be in the same sentence with Chris Paul, but Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo, is quickly making a name for himself throughout the NBA. In last night’s game versus the Indiana Pacers, Rondo had 16 points, 13 rebounds, and 17 assists. Numbers that nobody thought he could put up when he was coming out of Kentucky. Now, Rondois making a strong bid to make his first All-Star team. The big question last season, was if Rondo could handle playing with three bona fide All-Stars, he had some difficulty at times, after all it was only his second season, but taking home that title last season proved to the rest of the NBA, Rajon Rondo is no joke. The Celtics have gone from the Big Three, to what looks like now to the Four Horsemen. More from

Rondo (16 points, 13 rebounds, 17 assists) continued an impressive roll that has coincided with the Celtics’ 10-game winning streak. In the first 11 games of the season, Rondo had 78 points and 73 assists; in the next nine games, he has totaled 125 points and 81 assists.

“He’s getting everybody easy shots, making the game look simple, and making it simple for everybody,” Garnett said. “When we’re good defensively, it’s because Rondo sets the tone by picking the ball up very early.”

The last Celtic to record a triple-double was Ryan Gomes (10 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists) in a 110-108 overtime win over Charlotte Nov. 8, 2006. Pierce (31 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists) was the last Celtic with a triple-double in a game that did not to go to OT, a 104-101 win over Philadelphia March 8, 2006.

Asked if Rondo might be expected to total a quadruple-double, Rivers joked, “Yeah, with turnovers, maybe. It’s possible. I mean, there’s very few guys that have that ability. There’s only been about four or five of them. He has the opportunity, someday. Hopefully soon. He has speed and quickness. There is a complete difference – there are a lot of guys who aren’t fast runners but have great first steps. Rondo’s one of the exceptions; he has both. Rondo’s a playmaking guard, and for our team, it’s the perfect fit because we have so many scorers.”
