Delaware Must Be Lovely This Time Of Year

Posted by Mike on October 29, 2008

With yesterday’s Game 5 still in suspension, the Tampa Bay Rays needed a hotel to stay in. There wasn’t one available in the city of Philadelphia. So where did the Rays go ? The always popular Delaware. Or, as Wayne would say, “Hi, I’m in Delaware“. The Rays were lucky enough to say in the Italian Renaissance hotel, were the likes of Joe DiMaggio, John F. Kennedy, Norman Rockwell and Katherine Hepburn stayed when they visited Wilmington, reports the USA Today. The reason for the Rays staying so far away, is because they checked out of their hotel before Game 5, and expected to head back to Tampa Bay after the game. Boy were they wrong! Now, for the past two days they’ve been able to experience just what exactly Delaware has to offer. More from USA Today:

It’s a magnificent hotel,” Rays manager Joe Maddon said. “It was a treat to come up with this situation at a moment’s notice. It’s all about Jeff Ziegler, the guy who pulled it off.”

Ziegler, though, wasn’t sure what would happen. When heavy rain started in the fifth inning, he got a “hollow feeling” in his stomach. The Rays needed 87 rooms for 170 people.

He called “20 or 21” hotels before he found the du Pont.

Some hotels thought his late-night request was a joke.

He also had to make sure he was following the Basic Agreement guidelines, which calls for “first-class accommodations,” he said.
