Red Sox Rumors

Derek Lowe would like to return to Boston:

Lowe told this reporter that while money is important, he wants to go to a quality organization committed to winning, and no organization, in his mind, fits that description better than Boston.

“I want to be with an organization that’s committed to winning and that can win,” said Lowe, who is scheduled to meet with Dodgers manager Joe Torre this week to discuss his future. “An organization that is going to be there year in and year out and do everything. That’s what means the most to me at this stage of my career.”

Red Sox will be keeping an eye on Brad Penny:

That’s why the Red Sox at least will explore the starting market this offseason, whether it’s inquiring about a trade for Padres ace Jake Peavy, checking out 2007 AL Cy Young winner CC Sabathia, or monitoring former Dodgers All-Star Brad Penny, a two-time 16-game winner whose $8.75 option may not get exercised because of a shoulder injury.

Jake Peavy does not want to play in New York, but he may waive his no-trade clause for the Red Sox. However, it will cost either Jacoby Ellsbury, or Clay Buchholz, plus two other top tier prospects to get Peavy. He looks like he is definitely headed to Atlanta. Peavy does not want to pitch in the American League.

According to sources, the Padres have already let it be known they’ll be looking for two top, young pitchers and a front-line position player – preferably someone who can step in fairly soon and roam Petco Park’s large center field – in exchange for Peavy.

Red Sox will look into extending Kevin Youkilis, Dustin Pedroia, and Jonathan Papelbon this offseason.

Manny Ramirez to Toronto ?

J.P. Ricciardi-“Manny is not priority No. 1. I can’t even say he’s priority No. 2.  It would really be a long shot for us to bring him to Toronto. He’s on our radar, but maybe not on our radar like some people will report.  I don’t see us getting involved in unbelievable, astronomical numbers. We would not go down that path.”

Manny to get an A-Rod deal ?

The Dodgers appear willing to meet or come close to superstar free agent Manny Ramirez’s annual salary target but are strongly disinclined from acceding to his wish for a deal of five or six years, people familiar with the club’s thinking tell SI.com.

One person who’s spoken to Dodgers people suggested that the team is considering proposing a contract that may come close to matching Alex Rodriguez’s record $27.5-million average annual salary but on a much shorter term, perhaps only two years. That person hinted he could see the Dodgers even exceeding A-Rod’s salary, as long as the length of the deal was to their liking.

The Red Sox are also said to be very interested in signing first baseman Mark Teixeira of the Los Angeles Angels. This would clearly leave the Red Sox with a dilemma. Trade Kevin Youkilis or Mike Lowell ? It certainly will be very hard to trade Lowell after coming off hip surgery, and trading Youkilis makes no sense. Also, would the Red Sox really want spend over $20 Million Dollars for a hitter who is more of a complimentary piece than a star ? Look for Teixeira to end up either with the New York Yankees or Baltimore Orioles.
