Was Bill Russell Overrated ?

Posted by Mike on October 16, 2008

If winning 11 NBA Championships in a total of 13 seasons with the Boston Celtics is overrated then I’m sure a lot more people will want to be called overrated. David Thorpe on his latest ESPN chat called Bill Russell the game’s most overrated player of all-time:

Rob (Baltimore): Most overrated player in the history of the game: Wilt?

SportsNation David Thorpe: Russell, for those who think he was the single best player ever.

That is a bold statement. Bill Russell is widely viewed as the single greatest team player in the history of professional sports. He did what he had to do so the team could succeed. That is why Red Auerbach called him the best player he ever had, and why John Wooden said he was “the greatest defensive man I’ve ever seen”. That must be the qualifications for overrated nowadays. Sure Russell could have put up better numbers, but it wasn’t about numbers, he wasn’t Wilt Chamberlain, Russell goals were to win as a team, not to put up the most points. He did something that will never be replicated, winning 11 championships in 13 years. That should speak for it’s self. Overrated is something that should never be in the same sentence as Russell.
