You Can Stop Holding Your Breath: Brian Scalabrine Will Not Be Cut

Posted by Mike on October 15, 2008

Somehow, someway, Boston Celtics reserve/bench-warmer Brian Scalabrine will make the team this year out of training camp, according to the Boston Herald. Which means either Danny Ainge will make a trade, which is unlikely, or the Celtics will cut one of two players: Darius Miles or Gabe Pruitt. It’s likely that it will be Miles who would be cut because his contract is non-guaranteed and he has questions surronding how long and how much he can play, but with the re-signing of Sam“don’t call me Matt Cassel” Cassell, and seeing Tony Allen play more point guard in the preseason it’s possible that Pruitt just may be the odd man out. The Portland Trailblazers for one are hoping that Miles is cut, because if he plays 10 games with the Celtics his $10 Million dollar salary cap figure will go back on there payroll, which will hurt them when it comes to re-signing and signing future free agents. But why god can’t they just release Scal and eat his salary. Why ? More from the Boston Herald:

What will happen with Scalabrine is open to suggestion. He makes $3.2 million this season and is on the books for $3.4 million in 2009-10. Assuming he doesn’t get into the mix with the C’s, he could be valuable as a trade facilitator, in that teams have to be able to trade money away to take back a decent contract.

Celtics boss Danny Ainge, however, insists Scalabrine still can play a role, pointing to the run in late January and early February when he filled in for Kevin Garnett.

“I have no intention of cutting Scal,” Ainge said. “It’s early. We think Scal can help us. Last year when KG got hurt, Scal started and we were 7-2 in those games. Our team defense was even better. I’m not saying he’s a better defensive player than KG, but we were able to maintain things and play good team defense.”

Doc Rivers also appreciates Scalabrine.
