MLB Playoff Recap

The first game of the playoff season was the Brewers against the PhilliesCole Hamels shut down the Brew Crew for 8 innings and no runs and 8 K’s. He was on his game this year, last year he allowed 3 runs and walked a lot of base runners against the Rockies, in a series the Rockies swept. He said he learned a lot from that start and it showed cause he was virtually unhittable yesterday. The Phillies play again today with Bret Meyers taking on CC SabathiaBret Myers rejuvenated his career after being recalled from the minors this season, and looks alot like the pitcher the Phillies hoped he’d be. CC is going on three days rest for the 4th consecutive start, he won the game to get them into the Playoffs and now he has to win today for the Brew Crew to have any shot of going to the World Series.

The second game on the TBS docket was the Dodgers aganist the Cubbies. Poor Cubbies they had the best record in the NL and they draw the Dodgers. The Cubbies got out to an early 2-0 lead after a 2-run homer by DeRosa, D Lowe ended up settling down and pitched well the rest of the game. However the Cubbies sent out Dempster who was a stud at Wrigley this year going 14-3, but he was not on his game yesterday, he had alot of walks and had deep counts all game along, and had base runners in every inning. He was able to pitch out of trouble until the 5th inning when he walked the bases-loadedwith two outs, and on a 1-2 pitch James Loney hit a grand slam and the Dodgers never looked back. The Dodgers later added 3 more runs, one of the being a solo shot by Mannywood and won game 1, 7-2. Its Big Z against Billingsly tonight, good match up.  It doesn’ t look good for the Cubbies because the team who wins game one wins 88% of the time in the NLDS.

The third game was the Red Sox against the Angels. The Red Sox showed their postseason dominance over the Angels as they won their 10th straight postseason game against them. It was a great pitching match up between Jon Lester and John Lackey. The only run the Angels scored was caused by an error on Jed Lowrie that kept the inning alive and Torri Hunter singled in Garret Anderson. However in the 6th the Sox put a 2 spot up after a Youkillis walk Jason Bay hit a 2 run homer to take the lead for good. Lackey made Bay look terrible his first 2 at bats striking himout with curve balls, but some reason he decided to throw high heat and Bay took advantage and hit the bomb. The Sox eneded tacking on 2 more runs in the top of the 9th to win 4-2. Papelbon ended up striking the side out to get the save. The next game is Friday night with Daisuke against Santana. Side note-why didn’t Lisa Guerrero blog about Angel fans leaving in the 8th being down only one run?

Tonight, the Rays play there first postseason game in team history with James Shields going up against Javier Vasquez. Everyone is jumping on the Rays I’m not to sure they will be able to win the series against a veteran White Sox team. Ya the Rays have the pitching but no experience and experience plays a big role in the playoffs. Anyway they have been the story of the season.
